Dear Colleague
Many of you will have heard the deeply sad news of the death of Professor Jason Arday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, students, and all those whose lives he touched.
We recognise that news of this nature may evoke a range of emotions, including sadness, shock, grief, anger, anxiety, or reflection. While each person's response will be different, events affecting prominent ethnic minority academics can resonate particularly strongly with colleagues from underrepresented backgrounds. For some, this news may prompt reflection on personal and professional experiences within higher education, including issues of belonging, visibility, support, and wellbeing.
As the Welsh Ethnic Minority Professors Initiative, we want to acknowledge these feelings and remind members that they do not have to navigate them alone. We encourage anyone affected by this news to seek support where needed and to prioritise their wellbeing.
Support is available through a range of services, including:
Your university's Wellbeing Service
Staff counselling and mental health support services
Occupational Health services
Employee Assistance Programmes (where available)
Peer support networks, mentors, trusted colleagues, and professional communities
We would also encourage members to check in with one another and, where appropriate, create space for supportive conversations. Communities such as WEMPI exist not only to advance equity and inclusion in higher education, but also to provide solidarity, understanding, and mutual support during difficult times.
We understand that experiences and reactions will vary. Whether you wish to engage in discussion, seek support, or simply take time to reflect, we encourage you to do what feels right for you.

Please take care of yourselves and of one another.
With warm regards,
On behalf of the Welsh Ethnic Minority Professors Initiative (WEMPI)
